Stockholm Industrial

Ulvsunda

Not only is the Ulvsunda industrial zone within walking distance from my dwellings, it's also an area where a number of relatives have worked in the past. A grandfather was employed at different print shops here, my grandmother in the office of a large logistics supplier, both my dad and his brother had summer jobs in the area. Within the extended family there are even more connections.

The area became assigned for industry when the 20th century was very young but it took until the 40s before any major developments started. The zone's industrial prime is now in the past and most of the lots near the water will make way for housing in the near future. Thanks to the neighbouring Stockholm domestic airport not all will be converted and the area lives on.

Johannesfred

While a part of Ulvsunda it's a little world on its own and deserves a headline. A large part was demolished around 2010 and is now home to the Stockholm light rail depot.

A first taste of a northen suburb classic and a household name for anyone into the Stockholm graffiti scene. When typing this most has been demolished to make way for housing.

Magasinvägen & Sun Chemical

The Sun Chemical plant was a part of the passing scenery during the commuter train ride to town when growing up. Now it's gone, just like many meters of soil underneath it. While the nearby Magasinvägen lives on most of what's depicted below is no more.

An area just north of the Bromma airport that ended up in a kind of hiatus for many years as development plans were put to a halt. Eventually most of the buildings were demolished to make way for a large warehouse.

Sulkyvägen

A former military compound that served as a kind of commercial zone for a couple of decades before, yes, being demolished. Just after being emptied it also served as an improvised graffiti fame. Quite obvious from the pics here, I guess. When writing this the area is still undeveloped but my guess is that it'll be used for housing.

Kvarteret Messingen

Close to the Upplands Väsby commuter train station there was once an area called Kvarteret Messingen, or Väsby företagcenter, if you prefer that. It consisted of a number of buildings of very varying ages and use. From small to large offices, all kinds of repair and work shops, as well as a knight's smith shop (!) and so on. All was demolished and the area now consists of a new high school, a library with a café and apartments.
