This decaying yet outdoor-fresh compound opened in 1934 as a sports airfield but was soon incorporated with the local luftwaffe. After the second world war it was in use by the Soviet forces until 1992 when everything was handed back to the German state. What the 286 hectare area (706 acres) and 208 buildings could be used for today hasn't been decided. Among the ideas presented are housing or an ecovillage. To my knowledge the only action taken so far has been to clear out the dense vegetation around the buildings.
... yes, that is the wind playing with the remains of the hangar roof. An eerie yet beautiful noise. Field recorders, take note.
